UUMAC: UU Mid-Atlantic Community
July 27 to August 2, 2003
UUMAC 2003 will be located on the beautiful campus of DeSales University
in Center Valley, Pa.
This is a great week long conference with a strong Young Adult component that I'll be
organizing summer. There are a few positions open for Children's program teachers,
which provide a full Scholarship to UUMAC and only requires three hours each morning.
Contact dduane at duane.com if interested.
What is UUMAC?
UUMAC is a wonderful Unitarian Universalist community (which happens to
look a whole lot like a UU summer conference).
UUMAC is a gathering of UU's of all ages for one week of the summer.
UUMAC's goal is to provide spiritual exploration, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
UUMAC consists of scheduled activities, optional activities, and free time.
The activities are described on the Virtual Tour.
UUMAC is intergenerational: some activites involve people of all ages,
while some are for specific age groups.
UUMAC usually consists of 150 to 200 people. (A very comfortable size, we might add).
UUMAC is held on a rural college campus.
What's the scoop on UUMAC 2003?
The latest news about UUMAC 2003 is available at http://www.uumac.org

Don't miss the savings! General Assembly Young Adult Housing.
================================================================
General Assembly - Boston, MA - June 26th-30th 2003
Young Adult housing at GA is available as a cheaper option for people who
like to hang out with young adults or whose budget can't handle the hotel
rates. The GA Young Adult Caucus leadership decided to make these rooms
available to everyone, not just Young Adults, in order to increase the
financial accessibility of this General Assembly for everyone.
Hotel rooms (3 single beds per room, private baths) are available at the
Fenway Hostel for $225 per person/bed (triple occupancy--though we'll sell
you a whole room if you want for $675) total for the five nights of GA, and
hostel rooms (6 single beds per room, shared bath) at the Visit
<http://www.uua.org/ya-cm/conferences/ga_housing.html for more information.
The mission of GA Young Adult Caucus is to provide an affordable, inclusive,
and empowering community for young adults to network, worship, and share a
collective voice as participants in the larger GA community.

====================================================================
3. Volunteer at General Assembly! Work at the Young Adult Booth!
====================================================================
OK this is your chance, your chance to help out the Young Adults office,
your chance to help our CUUYAN. Your chance to tell the whole UU world your
story as a Young Adult UU. How did you get here, what has the UUA done for
you, and what can the Young Adult and Campus Ministry community do for the
UUA as a whole.
At GA in Boston the CUUYAN will have a very large booth in the exhibit hall.
This is a major point of outreach for us. We have more space than most, and
can really use to get the word out about what we can do, and how important
we are to the UU movement. Just think, we have YA/CM coordinators all over
now; we have more and more YA/CM groups now than ever before. There are
many YA who are in seminary soon to join the ranks of the UU Ministry.
Please come and help in the booth, we need people lots and lots of people to
man the booth. We will be doing some sales (remember to do all of this we
need money). We will be doing outreach, all those people at GA are looking
to see what is going on, what can they do, what can their congregations do
to help the UUA grow. Well let's let them in on all the wonderful things we
can do.
Please contact Oliver Gross (contact information below) CUUYAN booth
coordinator to volunteer your time while at GA, you will get to meet many
other YA some like yourself some not. You will be better connected and be
able to help out the movement. The best part is you will have a great time
doing it, and you will help out this wonderful part of the UUA.

6. Contribute to the ConCentric Reader 2003
============================================
The ConCentric Reader is a grassroots collection of writings by and for the
Young of Adult & Campus Ministry community. Envisioned during the first
year of ConCentric in 1999, the ConCentric Reader has been published twice
at ConCentric 1999 and 2000. We are excited to be publishing again and

concerns of our generation of leaders.

About the Theme: Congregations and C*UUYAN: Partners or Adversaries?
Since C*UUYAN was established in 1986, there have been debates about the
relationship between C*UUYAN and congregations. Concerns have been voiced
over the years as to the role of young adult groups within congregations and
the grassroots vision of C*UUYAN on the one hand, and the ability of
congregations and the generally older age culture to effectively welcome a
spiritually alive and justice centered young adult population on the other.
While many things have changed since 1986, this theme is still running
strong among young adults, congregational leaders, ministers, DRE¹s and UUA
staff.
What is your opinion? What is your vision for how congregations and C*UUYAN
work together? Are C*UUYAN and congregations inherently incompatible in our
current configuration? What are the concerns of young adults and
congregations? What are the concerns of congregations about young adults?
How can we be effective partners? If we are adversaries, what solutions
might there be? How does the rise of activism and social justice
consciousness in C*UUYAN affect our relationship? What are the
opportunities, what are our challenges?
=======================================================================
7. Volunteer: Seeking persons of color participants for a new DRUUMM Online Study
=======================================================================
We are seeking persons of color participants for a new DRUUMM Online Study
Group. The purpose of the DRUUMM Online Study Group is to:
- Build personal relationships within DRUUMM
- Learn about each others stories and experiences as persons of color
- Deepen our awareness of the racial & cultural diversity within DRUUMM and
the UUA
The Study Group will be limited to 10 participants who we ask agree to the
following expectations:
-email subscription to a DRUUMM Study Group list
-10 week commitment beginning June 14th and ending August 3rd
-4 email responses to Study Group questions by set deadlines June 14th, June
28th, July 13th and July 27th.
-Evaluation form
This is our first pilot test of an Online Study Group, and hope to recruit
members to moderate future study groups. We anticipate that participation
will mean an average of 1 hour each week of reading and writing.
If you or someone you know would be interested, please email Joseph Lyons
jlyons at uua.org <mailto:jlyons at uua.org by June 9th 2003.
=======================================================================
8. Internship: World Council of Churches now seeking YA internships in
Geneva, Switzerland.
=======================================================================
The World Council of Churches is inviting applications for its young adult
internship program available September 2003 to September 2004 at the
organization's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Anyone age 18-30 with
the ability to communicate in English is eligible (knowledge of Spanish,
French, or German is desirable). Six people will be accepted into the
program. Deadline for applications is June 10. More information is available
at <http://wcc-coe.org/wcc/what/jpc/interns.html
======================================================================
9. Volunteer: The Chiapas Peace House Project is now open and placing
volunteers
======================================================================
In the last two years the number of international human rights observers in
Chiapas has dropped substantially. Human rights organizations including
Global Exchange, Witness for Peace and the Christian Peacemaker Teams have
closed their offices there. At the same time the Fox administration has done
an excellent public relations job and has convinced much of the world that
peace exists in Chiapas. This is not true. The past year has seen an
increase in the number of attacks on and assassinations of community
leaders. The Mexican government and military
are threatening as many as thirty communities in the Montes Azules biosphere
with displacement. Solidarity work with the indigenous people of Chiapas is
now as important as ever.
The Chiapas Peace House Project places volunteers with other NGOs working in
Chiapas. We ask that volunteers speak Spanish at a conversational level and
make at least a month commitment to working in Chiapas. In addition to
placement we offer volunteers housing, board and space for reflection.
If you are interested in volunteering with the CPHP please email
volunteer at uupeacehouse.org.

10. UUs Serving Prison Sentences for Participating in Non-Violent Civil
Disobedience
=====================================================================
"I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is
unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to
arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality
expressing the highest respect for the law." Martin Luther King Jr.
Young Adult Unitarian Universalists Mimi LaValley and Jason Lydon are now
serving 3 and 6-month prison terms for participating in acts of non-violent
civil disobedience protesting the US run School of the Americas (SOA)/
Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Cooperation
(WHINSEC).
Ft. Benning is home to the notorious US Army School of the Americas,
recently renamed the Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Cooperation
(WHINSEC). WHINSEC is a self-described institute for the "professional
education and training of military, law enforcement, and civilian personnel
of nations of the Western Hemisphere", a training camp for Latin American
soldiers, financed by American tax dollars
<http://www.benning.army.mil/whinsec/InstituteCharter.pdf). Graduates of
the school include Panama's Manuel Noriega, the assassins who ousted
Salvador Allende, the democratically elected leader of Chile, in a military
coup and Leopoldo Galtieri, the leader of Argentina's "Dirty War". Countless
other atrocities are attributed to those who have studied at this school,
including the slaughtering and "disappearance" of youth organizers, union
leaders, clergy people and their families. Amnesty International recently
did a report on the legacy of human rights abuses committed by those trained
at the school and found that "While some curriculum changes have been
implemented at this training institute, no one has ever been held
accountable for the unlawful training manuals or for the behavior of SOA
graduates." (Unmatched Power, Unmet Principles: The Human Rights Dimensions
of US Training of Foreign Military and Police Forces is available at
